The Dark Phoenix!

Welcome to the Uncanny X-Men Chronology 1980. It picks up with X-Men issues from 1980 and includes the Dark Phoenix Saga which was published as a special issue graphic novel consisting of Issues No. 129 through 138. This is the third part of the X-Men Chronology posted at Wikia Entertainment: X-Men and moves forward with the continuing theme of Jean Grey as the Phoenix.

This page has many spoilers, but the presumption is you are here to read about the X-Men. I put it together as a reference for X-Men movie fans who are not aware of their history. It is a work in progress and should be updated frequently.

Please note that the terms "issue", "episode", and "chapter" are used interchangeably. Also note that the "Characters Introduced" section does not mean this is the first place these characters have ever appeared. It is just the first time they appeared in the X-Men world. Also note, I have not included the names of the X-Men team in the Character's Featured list. It is more or less a given they are in the story (but not always). -Titanic71 (D.Peck).

01/10/2011- Made some changes to the guide regarding confusion to the identity of James MacDonald Hudson. In Issue 109 he referred to himself as Weapon Alpha. In Issue 120 he was called Vindicator, while online he can be found at Marvel Universe under the name Guardian. Additional confusion stemmed from seeing a reference to Heather McNeil Hudson at Marvel Universe who is also listed as "Vindicator" and formerly "Guardian". It's possible there has been a reboot later in the series or simply the authors at Marvel Universe are in error. In essence, after going through several circles of changes, all references to Heather McNeil who first appears in Issue No. 139 (1980) will be left as "Heather McNeil" until I can verify her real alias. Find info on Weapon Alpha, Vindicator, and Guardian under James MacDonald Hudson in the Guest Appearance Lists.

X-Men Themes 1980

1980 X-Men comics continue the story of Jean Grey as the Phoenix. Her transformation into the Phoenix resulted from being exposed to the the M'kraan Crystal in the Shi'ar Empire and then receiving a massive dose of radiation while returning to Earth (Issue No.101- 1976). It is now four years later. The possession of unlimited power weighs on Jean Grey's psyche.

You may also recall that starting with Issue No.122 (1979) Jean Grey bumped into Jason Wyngarde (Mastermind) in a town in Scotland. Ever since Mastermind has been manipulating her mentally (see Issue No.126), transporting her into an alternate reality/fantasy of being a 1700's "lady" in love with him, so eventually she will do the bidding of the Hellfire Club as their Black Queen. The early episodes are brief and initially have had no apparent bearing on the outcome of the X-Men's adventures other than to establish the foundation, but come to a head with the Hellfire Club's nefarious plans, Mastermind's manipulation of Jean Grey, and her subsequent emergence as the Dark Phoenix in Issues 134-135. The Dark Phoenix Saga concludes with Issue 137 and it's not a happy ending.

I realize I've said this before, but it deserves saying again, The X-Men movies while being outstanding stories and movies, constitute an alternate reality from the comics as far as the X-Men relationships and especially the story of Jean Grey. Primary X-Men characters have been severely short changed such as Angel and even Iceman. Beast makes a decent appearance in The Last Stand movie, but relationships and relative ages are all jumbled around. In the real story, the original X-Men, Beast, Iceman, Cyclops, Angel, and Jean Grey (Marvel Girl) are teenagers growing up together under the tutelage of Professor Charles Xavier. Jean Grey was not a psycho who was manipulated by Xavier as a child (as told in the movie) into being a sane and rational mutant. Yes, Jean becomes the Phoenix, the most powerful mutant in history, all most attaining "god-like" qualities, but this occurs after several events collide, resulting in disaster. And no, especially no, Charles Xavier and Magneto were never anything close to being friends. However I admit, I do like in the movies, they gave Erik Lehnsherr more depth then portrayed in the comics. At this point in the 1980's, the original X-Men team is long gone, and they have grown into adults.- Dave Peck.

Wolverine, Colossus and Storm!

Revealed in episode 110, Warhawk's raid of Xavier's mansion was to hack into Cerebro on behalf of the Hellfire Club. They know everything Cerebro (Xavier's mutant sensing computer) knows. When Cerebro senses two new mutants, the Professor dispatches Scott and Jean to NYC to intercept one of them while he takes Storm, Colossus, and Wolverine to Chicago for the other. The Hellfire club headed by Sebastian Shaw plans on beating them to the punch and recruiting these new mutants into their evil organization.

The Chicago mutant is 13 year old Katherine (Kitty) Pride. Her ability is to teleport. The Hellfire Club sends the White Queen, alias Emma Frost to invite her to join an exclusive school. As Emma Frost leaves the Pride's house, the Professor and his group arrive to invite Kitty to their school. At a malt shop, Wolverine, Colossus, and Storm treat Kitty to a malt. They are telepathically attacked by Emma Frost knocking them out, but Kitty escapes by teleporting through the wall. Wolverine, Storm, and Colossus are loaded onto a hover craft to be whisked to a secret destination on the outskirts of Chicago. Emma Frost thinks Kitty has escaped, but does not realized that in actuality Kitty has boarded the hovercraft and is trying to think of a plan to rescue the X-Men!

Notes and Trivia

  • Banshee (Sean Cassidy) leaves the X-Men because his mutant power, a sonic scream has been damaged and he has no idea if he will ever recover. More importantly, he has a romantic relationship with Moira MacTaggart and she needs him after the loss of both her husband and son.

Movie Parallels

  • Kitty Pride featured in X-Men 2 & X-Men 3: Last Stand as a student at Xavier's School for Gifted Children who helped fight Magneto and his Brotherhood of Mutants.

Issue No.130- Dazzler (1980)

Summary

In search of the newly Cerebro-detected mutant in NYC, Cyclops, Nightcrawler, and Jean Grey drive to Delano Street and enter a disco nightclub in a run down building. Unknown to them, they are being tracked and an attack is being readied against them by the Hellfire Club led by Sebastian Shaw.

Xm130

Issue No.130 1980

Shaw receives a report from Emma Frost in Chicago that Storm, Colossus, Wolverine, and Xavier have been captured, but that Kitty Pride has escaped. Frost does not realize that Kitty has followed them to Emma's hideout and sneaks in to talk to Storm, one of the X-Men prisoners. Kitty barely escapes the compound after receiving a phone number.

Back at the disco, Jean sees Jason Wyngarde (Mastermind). Immediately her reality shifts back 300 years where she is getting married to Wyngarde and then she is presented to the crowd as the Black Queen! Reality jumps forward for Jean as Scott sees her kissing Wyngarde and is puzzled, "it's as if she is not Jean." His attention shifts as the disco crowd is introduced to a new character, Dazzler who enthralls the crowd with her entertainment abilities and more importantly her mutant dazzling powers.

In a near panic, Kitty calls the number she got from Storm and reaches Nightcrawler outside the NYC disco club sitting in Xavier's Rolls Royce. She warns him of the situation in Chicago. Nightcrawler, Jean and Cyclops are attacked at the club and defeat the assailants with the help of Dazzler. They jump in Xavier's Rolls and speed away, driving by Mastermind who laughs as his plan comes together.

No.131 (1980)

Issue No.131- Run For Your Life! (1980)

Summary

Kitty Pride has escaped Frost Enterprises is literally on the run from the Hellfire Club pursued by a car of thugs when Phoenix drops between them and demolishes the car. Nightcrawler scoops up Kitty and whisks her away! Dazzler has accompanied the X-Men to Chicago. With prisoners from the car, they move to the X-Men's Sky Ship hidden in a park where Phoenix mentally interrogates the prisoners learning about the Hellfire Club, Emma Frost, and the X-Men who are held prisoner. Phoenix is confused, weighing her visions of love with the Jason Wyngarde of 300 years ago, the Jason Wyngarde she saw in the disco, and realizing he is a member of the Hellfire club they are currently fighting.

The action moves to Frost Enterprises where the X-Men, Cyclops, Jean, and Nightcrawler use subterfuge and disguises to bluff their way in as Kitty sneaks in through the back wall, where she finds and releases Wolverine from a cage. Colossus and Xavier are released. Storm is tortured by the White Queen, Emma Frost before the fighting begins.

The X-Men fight and easily handle Emma Frost's minions. Two power mutants, Emma Frost and Phoenix, go head to head. Their fight results in a huge explosion that wrecks the entire complex. Phoenix and Storm emerge unscathed. The fate of the White Queen is unknown. Xavier is there to complement the X-Men on the way they handled themselves. Kitty Pride's father is pissed that his daughter disappeared for a day, not knowing the X-Men with Kitty's help fought Emma Frost of the Hellfire Club. Suddenly with the unsolicited help from Jean Grey, his attitude suddenly changes to gratitude. Scott and Storm are shocked that Jean would use her telepathic powers to alter the mind of an innocent person.

Notes and Trivia

  • Jean displays her power to change the molecules of her clothing to a different outfit. Her ability to rearrange molecules was illustrated in X-Men 3: The Last Stand.
  • Nightcrawler's ability to teleport while fighting was illustrated in X-Men 2: X-Men United.
  • Scott Summers starts worrying about Phoenix's power.
  • Xavier invites Dazzler to join the X-Men, but she declines.

No. 132 (1980)

Issue No.132- And Hellfire Is Their Name (1980)

Summary

In New Mexico, the X-Men meet with one of the X-Men founding members, Angel (Warren Worthington III) and his girl friend Candy Southern. Cyclops has brought the X-Men to see Angel and ask for his help against the Hellfire Club. Angel is surprised and asks Scot if he is sure about the Hellfire club because both he and Candy are members. (Angel inherited membership as part of Worthington Industries when his parents died.) Scott tells Angel that the Hellfire Club knows all about the X-Mens' powers, plans, and their fighting methods.

One week later in Manhattan, the Hellfire Club is celebrating it's birthday while in the sewers below Wolverine and Nightcrawler are on a mission to infiltrate. The X-Men Cyclops, Phoenix, Colossus, and Storm are attending using false identities and invites by way of Angel. Unfortunately the leaders of the Hellfire Club spot them quickly. Sebastian Shaw tells Jason Wyngarde that he wants Jean Grey (Pheonix), (the woman Wyngarde has been manipulating with a virtual past, to lead the attack against the X-Men. As Cyclops and Phoenix move onto the dance floor, Mastermind appears, cuts in and quickly whisks Jean away in distance and time as her husband of 300 years ago.

It is revealed that Jean has told Scott about her "timeslips" and visions of being married to Wyngarde so he is looking for motive and is suspicious of him. Suddenly Scott realizes Wyngarde is Mastermind as he escorts Phoenix upstairs!

Under Mastermind's control, Jean Grey, transforms into the Black Queen and incapacitates Scott Summers! Colossus and Storm engage Shaw, but the only effect Colossus's punch has on him is to make Shaw, (a mutant), stronger! Storm's powers are also ineffective. In the basement of the Hellfire Club, Pierce and Leland take on Wolverine and Night Crawler. Pierce is revealed to be a cyborg when Wolverine attacks him. Leland increases Wolverine's mass incapacitating him until he crashes through the floor into the sewers below and escapes. The other X-Men are defeated while Wolverine vows revenge!

Notes and Trivia

  • It might be assumed that Jean Grey and Scott Summers have sexual relations during a picnic. The only hint is that while Jean and Scott embrace and kiss, she tells him "This is our moment, let's not waste it.
  • Under Mastermind's control, Jean Grey becomes the Black Queen and helps defeat the X-Men in battle.
  • Sebastian Shaw is a mutant who absorbs energy directed at him.
  • Donald Pierce of the Hellfire Club is a cyborg, part human and part robot!
  • Harry Leland, the Black Bishop of the Hellfire Club is a mutant who can increase the mass of the object of his attention, like Wolverine so he can't move!

Movie Parallels

  • In one of the most annoying applications of a scene taken from the comics and inserted into an X-Men movie (X-Men 3: The Last Stand), Jean Grey lifts Scott Summer's visor from his eyes and tells him to "open his eyes, nothing will happen". She uses her telekinetic powers to keep Cyclops optic power in check as they embrace and kiss. In this story she is not insane and does not kill him.

Summary

Wolverine crawls from out of the sewers into the basement of the Hellfire Club to engage the Hellfire minions who have been searching for him. Wolverine handily defeats them while above in the library, Shaw, Pierce, Leland, and the Black Queen (Jean Grey) gloat over the defeat of the X-Men. Jean is under the mental control of Mastermind (Jason Wyngarde). Shaw wants to use the X-Men as guinea pigs for genetically engineering powerful mutants.

It is revealed during their passionate picnic in the last issue Scott has agreed to establish a permanent mental rapport with Jean and he tries to figure out how to use this to snap her out of Mastermind's control. Using this rapport, Cyclops finds himself in an astral mental plane where he sword fights Mastermind who tells Cyclops when he dies, his mental rapport with Jean will be broken and the X-Men will have no hold on her. Cyclops is stabbed and in reality he collapses and appears to be dead! Wolverine is last seen fighting his way up to the second floor where the X-Men prisoners are being held.

On Muir Island, after reviewing data on Jean Grey, Moira MacTaggart has determined that as a result of becoming the Phoenix, her mind self engaged mental locks to keep her powers, as incredible as they are, dialed back to a manageable level. The problem is that something has been slowly releasing these locks and there are all most none left.

Notes and Trivia

  • After studying her data on Jean Grey, Moira MacTaggart discovers that as a result of becoming the Phoenix, her mind self engaged mental locks to keep her powers, as incredible as they are, dialed back to a manageable level. The problem is that something has been slowly releasing these locks and there are all most none left.

Movie Parallels

  • In contrast to the comic, X-Men 3: The Last Stand twisted the story of Jean Grey turning her into an unbalanced mutant youth. In the movie, it was Professor Xavier who put in place the mental blocks to correct her child hood affliction that were broken when Jean was engulfed in the deluge from the broken damn at Alkali Lake, turning her into the insane psychopath, otherwise known as the Dark Phoenix. In the comic, it was the process of turning into the Phoenix, that Jean Grey's brain placed it's own mental blocks initially to control her limitless power, and then later when they failed, in a battle with the Professor, he was able to control her with his own psychic-blocks in her mind.
  • A character named Senator Kelly, Presidential candidate appears in this episode. In the movie, he was an anti-mutant crusader. In the comic, he is a guest of the Hellfire Club.

Knocking it out he tries to help her escape but while off guard is brutally attacked by this annoying monster who keeps yelling "Wen-Di-Go!" The Wendigo appears protected by magic and is all most invulnerable. Nightcrawler and Vindicator jump into the fight followed by Snowbird who turns herself into a large white wolverine and throws herself at it. The danger is when she transforms into an animal, she loses her human focus. She smacks down the Wendigo into unconsciousness but then turns on the X-Man Wolverine. However Logan is able to talk her back into her human form apparently causing her to develop a fondness for him.

Shaman takes over and in a ceremony, releases George Baptiste from the curse that turned him into the Wendigo! George is elated to be free of the curse until Vindicator arrests him! Back in Ottawa, Vindicator is informed that Alpha Flight is being disbanded due to budget problems. The Issue ends when a powerful mutant named Blob literally breaks out from a U.S. Maximum Security Prison and heads to join the "New Brotherhood of Evil Mutants"!

Notes and Trivia

Even Xavier refers to mutants as "Homo Superior". In a flashback Wolverine reveals that the addition of his adamantium claws in essence turning him into a killing machine was not his desire. Although not said, it could be inferred that it was the Canadian Secret Service that did this to him. He resents it and it is why he left them for the X-Men. Snowbird becomes fond of Wolverine. Nightcrawler asks Wolverine if it is right to kill even if it is justified, causing Wolverine to contemplate this question. Alpha Flight is disbanded by the Canadian government due to money problems.

Issue No.141

Issue No.141- Days of Future Past (1981)

Summary

141Big- New Evil Mutants

New Brotherhood of Evil Mutants!

This astonishing Issue and large summary starts with a flash forward to a dilapidated Manhattan Island, NYC in the 21st Century. An adult Sprite (Kitty Pryde) is making her way through the rubble when she runs into some thugs who attack her. She is wearing an inhibitor collar that prevents her from phasing through solid objects. Colonel Logan of the Canadian Resistance Army saves her, then hands her the last component of a jammer they need. He informs her that once the Sentinels are ready to move out of North America the other great countries of the world plan on nuking the U.S. He also tells her that "Phase 2" starts at midnight when he plans on breaking them out.

In the narrative, a future world of the year 2013 is described consisting of "H" for normal humans and "A" for Anomalous Humans that possess mutant genetic potential. The two groups are forbidden to breed. And then there are "M" mutants, made pariahs and outcasts by the Mutant Control Act of 1988. Having returned to her Sentinel controlled camp, it is revealed the mutants are prisoners of the Sentinels. Kitty walks by the graves of Charles Xavier, Scott Summers, Kurt Wagner, Warren Worthington III and many others. Kitty is part of a plan which might ensure this nightmare never happens!

She rendezvous with surviving mutants Wolverine, Storm, Colossus, Franklin Richardsof the Fantastic Four, and his lady Rachel Summers, a telepath comprise the core of the Anti-Sentinel Resistance. They are joined by a wheel chair bound Magneto. In this reality, Sprite is married to Colossus. The piece furnished by Wolverine for the jammer is designed to neutralize the inhibitor collars the mutant wears. Kitty lays down on a mat to relax and focus her mind to join it with the other mutants as her soul reaches out across the abyss of eternity...

Back in 1980, the X-Men practice in the Danger Room when the unprepared Sprite blunders in and with the help of the X-Men barely survives. Nightcrawler has been trying to make friends with Sprite, but she is hesitant and scared of him. Later in a prepared session to get her up to speed, she has no problem navigating the Danger Room. But then, the psyche of the future Kitty Pryde collides with the present Kitty Pryde and she collapses to alarm of the other X-Men! On an examination table "Sprite" regains consciousness and to the complete surprise of Nightcrawler gives him a big hug and exclaims "Your alive!"

Over the X-Men's incredulity, she tells them a message from the future, that on today's date the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants succeed in killing Presidential Candidate Robert Kelly, Charles Xavier, and Moira MacTaggert! This occurrence triggers a chain of events that in thirty years will result in the destruction of the world by means of a nuclear holocaust. Not only that but she is the embodiment of the future Kitty Pryde here to prevent this horrific event.

During their flight to Washington DC to meet up with Xavier, she tells them more about the future. An anti-mutant President was elected who activated the Sentinels. This was a mistake as the Sentinels decided the best way to control mutants was to take over the entire country and then go after the rest of the world. A telepath named Rachel Summers devised a plan to send Kitty's psyche into the void in the hopes of meeting up with present day Kitty and it worked!

In the future as Wolverine helps the mutant prisoners escape, they are discovered by Sentinels and Franklin Richards is killed.

In 1980 at the Pentagon, Washington, D.C. we discover Raven Darkholme working in the Research Division. Her mutant name is well known to fans of the movies: Mystique! The New Brotherhood of Evil Mutants has a nest near the Defense Department and she is the leader along with other new mutants to the series: Destiny, Avalanche, Pyro and the return of Blob. Destiny is a PreCog that Mystique considers a friend. Avalanche can make any solid object crumble. Pyro can control fire but can't create it. And Blob, a mutant and former carnival worker from near the beginning of the series does not like being led by a woman. Regardless, they attack the Senate hearing that Robert Kelly is leading and both Xavier and Moira MacTaggart are testifying before regarding mutants. Due to the future-Kitty Pryde's intervention, the X-Men are there to meet the Brotherhood head on.

Issue No.142- Mind Out Of Time! (1981)

Summary

142Big-XMen

X-Men 1980!

A continuation of the dual- present/future story. The X-Men engage The New Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, led by Mystique on the Senate floor! Posing as a police woman, Mystique convinces Xavier and Moira MacTaggert to follow her where she knocks them out with nerve gas.

While in the future (parallel storyline), Wolverine with escaped mutants Storm, Colossus, an unconscious Sprite, and Rachel Summers move to attack Sentinel HQs, The Baxter Building and former headquarters of the Fantastic Four.

Back in 1980, the Brotherhood has the upper hand and Kitty, Pryde not knowing exactly who will try to kill Senator Kelly moves to his side. Storm conjures a wind and blows the fighting group trough a wall to continue the battle outside. Neither group of mutants notices a fast reaction special ops team that arrives on the scene equipped with an energy weapon built by Shaw Industries. When asked which group to attack, the Commander says "Trash them all! We'll sort it out later!". Among the events, Pyro creates a giant Flame Monster that Storm blows out saving Wolverine from being burned to a crisp. She commands Wolverine to put away his claws, an order he does not take kindly. Her concern is that she does not want humans seeing mutants killing if it can be helped. Using a steel beam Colossus with the help of Wolverine, springs Blob into the air. When he comes back down Colossus delivers a mighty punch causing him to collide with Avalanche! Storm creates a monsoon which debilitates Pyro's returning Flame Monster. Nightcrawler beats the crap out of an impostor Nightcrawler who in reality is Mystique but she escapes.

In a shocking scene from the future, the battle against the Sentinels is a disaster. Wolverine attacks a Sentinel but is killed when a power beam reduces him to a adamantium skeleton! Storm receives a Sentinel thrown spear through the mid section and Colossus is killed in some unknown fashion.

The future depends completely upon Sprite's time travel, who back in 1980 is busy saving Senator Kelly from Destiny's crossbow attack! Of the Brotherhood, only Mystique remains on the loose. Before the X-Men leave the scene,Storm asks Senator Kelly to consider that mutants are good and bad just like regular people are, before he condemns all mutants.

This issue concludes a month later when Senator Kelly's Congressional Committee submits a harsh mutant report to the President. Ironically Kelly does not know that his friend Sebastian Shaw is a mutant. The President decides to start a top secret mutant project called Project Wideawake headed by Henry Peter Gyrich. The first priority is for Gyrich to work with Shaw Industries to create a new generation of Sentinels!

While tempted to turn the plane around Storm decides to continue on their mission. Wolverine demonstrates his distain by shredding the head with his claws.

In the shadows, Storm is observed by an old nemesis the X-Men thought was dead, Garokk, who fell into a thermal pit, in a Forbidden Land adventure and who Storm tried to save, but her attempt failed. It is revealed that Magneto saved Garrokand has commanded him to guard this ruined fortress. Garokk has been transformed into a being made of rock and crystal. While exploring Magneto's old complex Colossus is knocked out when Garokk punches him. Garokk tries to strike Sprite, but she escapes and weakens him when phasing through him. She has little time to wonder why her ability has hurt Garokk when he smashes a nearby wall unleashing a fresh flow of hot magma. To stop it, Storm freezes the area with a howling gail while Sprite holds her breath and phases through the magma escaping Garokk's second attack. On the move, Garokk knocks out Storm by flinging Colossus's body at her. He quickly digs a deep pit to throw her in, but when he is attacked by X-Men, he leaps into the pit with her. With the reluctant approval of Storm, Sprite floats into the pit and locates an unconscious Storm on a ledge. Out of the dark, she is attacked by Garokk who loses his footing and again appears to fall to his death far below.

Summary

Storm and Cyclops play handball using their mutant powers and call it a draw while 1.5 billion kilometers out in space Corsair (Major Christopher Summers) is heading back to Earth in an alien spaceship when a Shi'ar Dreadnaught ship appears on his scanner. He exclaims, "They have found me!" and tries desperately to avoid plasma torpedoes launched at him.

X-Men SR-71

On Magneto's island in the heart of the Bermuda Triangle, the X-Men are unloading crates as Professor discusses with Nightcrawler the possibility of using the Island as a refuge due to anti-mutant sentiment in the States. In the tower that will serve as living quarters (on Magneto's Island) Carol Danvers (Ms. Marvel who lost her memory and powers in Avengers Annual #10) discusses her past and her frustration at not being able to remember much of anything with her old friend from the Canadian military, Wolverine.

At Xavier's mansion, Ororo and Scott Summer's meal is interrupted when Corsair's spaceship goes ripping across the sky, crash landing in a nearby lake. Cyclops and Storm save Corsair, taking him to the mansion. Scott discovers dog tags revealing that Corsair is his father, but before Cyclops can get answers from Corsair, huge Sidrian Hunters (spider bounty hunters) burst through the wall of the mansion attacking Corsair. (This just after the X-Men had made mansion repairs from the fight with the Hellfire Club, Episode #152.)

Corsair mentions that these Hunters are mostly likely associated with the traitors who kidnapped Lilandra, Xavier's old flame and leader of the Shi'ar Empire. They flee the mansion in the X-Men's SR-71 and are shocked that the spiders combine to turn into a single large unit that comes after them. Cyclops flies the SR-71 playing cat and mouse with the aliens flying through downtown New York City as it tries to blast them. A quick maneuver puts the SR-71 on the alien's tale. Cyclops gets to tryout a new windshield that allows him to shoot his energy beam right through it but it's not enough. Storm leaps out of the SR-71 and conjures a combination of cyclone and lightning bolts around it. In the SR-71, Cyclops swings around and Cyclops hits it again with his energy beam which disrupts their matrix causing them to fall apart as individual creatures. Against their objections, Corsair shoots a tank in a nearby petrol farm with his hand held energy weapon that explodes the whole place, killing the aliens.

Corsair then tells Cyclops and Storm that a terrorist commando unit raided the Shi'ar Grand Council, killing most of it's members. They kidnapped Lilandra and made it look like the Starjammers led by Corsair were responsible, with a trail leading to Earth. A Shi'ar Battle Force led by Chancellor Araki is coming to Earth to seek vengeance. Corsair has come to give them a heads up!! (Story Continued.)

Issue No.156- Pursuit! (1982)

Summary

In the aftermath of the fight between the X-Men and Deathbird in downtown NYC resulting in the destruction of a sky scraper, the police are ready to arrest the X-Men while Colossus lays close to death. As Tigra explains to the police what happened, a Starjammers vehicle appears overhead and a transport beam grabs the X-Men leaving Tigra behind. Corsair is reunited with this crew of Starjammers and Colossus is given medical assistance.

Meanwhile on the Shi'ar Dreadnaught, Kitty Pryde amuses herself playing with the appearance synthesizer, making herself over until a hologram of Lord Samedar appears in there cell and they are shown a video of the X-Men's battle against Deathbird and the apparent death of Colossus. Knowing this video was shown to them to inflect pain, Sprite is livid!

In a shocking turn of events, Deathbird is revealed to be under the employment of Lord Samedar! Samedar is a traitor. On Deathbird's star ship, Xavier and Lilandraare reunited. On the Starjammer vessil in hot pursuit of Deathbird, Cyclops and Corsair consolidates their relationship, Corsair tells Cyclops the story of how they became separated and the death of his mother. Deathbird is revealed to be Empress Lilandra's older sister who desires Lilandra's throne.

Dropping out of light speed, the Starjammer closes in on Deathbird's ship when out of no where, a huge previously cloaked Brood ship appears on their tale, a gaping mouth swallows the Starjammer vehicle! The Brood ship appears to be organic as it couples with the Starjammer ship to gain access. Brood Shock Troops gather to assault the captive ship when the access hatch blows off. Led by a fully recovered Colossus, the X-Men and Starjammers engage in a furious battle with the Brood while Cyclops and Corsair are on a mission to find and release Xavier, (prisoner of Deathbird). They succeed in freeing both Xavier and Lilandra. (Editor's Note: I may have missed it but Deathbird's ship must have also docked with the Brood ship.)

The Brood Clan-Master decides the creatures they fight are so powerful, they must be captured. In a duel with Deathbird, Storm is swept out into space. With the Starjammers and X-Men, (with Lilandra) back on board their ship, it blasts free of it's Brood mooring and punches a hole out of the organic ship causing it great pain, accelerating within range to teleport Storm aboard. Lilandra reminds them that they have less than six hours to advise Chancellor Araki that she is safe, otherwise he will destroy the Earth! Corsair tells her they won't get back in time. (Story Continued.)

Notes and Trivia

  • Deathbird is Empress Lilandra's older sister who desires the Shi'ar throne for herself.
  • Corsair tells the story of how he, a USAF pilot and Cyclops were separated many years ago. Returning from a camping trip in Alaska with orders to become an Astronaut, Chris Summers is flying USAF aircraft (Mosquito), with his wife Katherine, and sons, Scott Summers (Cyclops), and Alex Summers (Havok) riding as passengers when an alien spacecraft attacks them. Katherine put Cyclops and Havok in the only parachute onboard and tossed them overboard. Katherine and Corsair were teleported onboard the Emperor of Shi'ar's starship, collected as zoological specimens of the highest order of life on Earth. However the Shi'ar Emperor had the hots for Katherine and when Corsair attempt to kill him failed, the Emperor responded by making him watch as he plunged a knife in Katherine's chest, killing her. Instead of killing Corsair, he was placed in the Star pits where he met Ch'od, Raza, and Hepzibah. They eventually stole a ship called the Starjammer and became pirates.

Xavier remains comatose from episode 157. Oracle tries to revive him by establishing a mental repoir but what she glimpses horrifies her, an evil alien presence that reaches out in a power field that joins them both. Moira commands Wolverine to sever the bond by thrusting his adamantium claws into the field, ending the ordeal! Oracle is shaken but ok. Sprite tells the group that the X-Men are on T.V. In an interview, Senator Robert Kelly accuses the X-Men of being criminals although in the fight in downtown NYC, the X-Men were defending themselves from the real criminals. Despite the X-Men having saved the Senator from assassination, Kelly accuses mutants of being a national security threat. The X-Men know that the government is holding files on them and based on Senator Kelly's interview, decides to plant a virus in the Pentagon computers that will erase all mutant records. The scene switches to the Rio Diablo Mountains where the Starjammer ship settles in front of the home of former X-Men, Alex Summers (Havok) and Lorna Dane (Polaris). Scott Summers (Cyclops) introduces Alex to their father Chris Summers (Corsair). Meanwhile, Carol Danvers, Storm, and Wolverine disguised as Military personnel, enter the Pentagon, where they bump into Rogue a mutant who absorbs other mutant's powers, and (in Avenger's Annual 10) permanently stole Carol's powers. Rogue slams Carol away from her and a melee breaks out in the halls of the Pentagon. During the fight Rogue lays a wicked kiss on Wolverine in an attempt to absorb his powers (Adamantium claws?). Rogue also absorbs Storm's powers, but unaccustomed to them unleashes a real uncontrollable storm inside the Pentagon, but manages to escape in a tornado. Pentagon officials realize these are X-Men and so does Raven Darkholme (Mystique), Deputy Director of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency. While the fighting continues, Mystique shape-shifts into Nick Fury (Director of Shield) and follows Danvers to the computer section to kill her, but Carol gets the upper hand, figuring out who she is and knocking her out, then turning her over to security. She erases the Pentagon's mutant files. She realizes she should have killed Mystique because it will just be a matter of time before the shape-shifter catches up with her.

Notes and Trivia

Kitty Pryde expresses her doubts about being an X-Man (Woman) and realizes she is in love with Colossus.

Movie Parallels

The Professor did not manipulate her or place psychic blocks in her mind to contain her vast power initially as portrayed in the movie. The placing of psychic blocks was something that happened automatically to her brain, but slowly those blocks were shed. Wielding unlimited power weighed on her, until when the last block was shed, she became the egomaniac and murdering Dark Phoenix. The Professor was not killed as portrayed in the movies. In fact with her subconscious help, the Professor defeated the Dark Phoenix and placed his own mental blocks in her mind. But by this time it was too late. She had murdered an entire solar system. The Shi'ar were intent on destroying her as a menace to life across the universe. The Professor's blocks did not hold and as the Dark Phoenix started to emerge, Jean Grey killed herself, triggering an alien weapon on the moon.

The Professor did not manipulate her or place psychic blocks in her mind to contain her vast power initially as portrayed in the movie. Upon becoming the Phoenix, the placing of psychic blocks was something that happened automatically to her brain, but slowly those blocks were shed.
