X-Men is part of the Marvel Universe - Earth 616.  In the Marvel Universe, ever since Fantastic Four volume 1 1, the stories are almost always set in the present year that the comics are printed.  The characters age very slowly.  The main problem is that events in characters lives are tied in to real historical events.  So this floating timeline must be fixed at some point.

The solution is that historical events in the Marvel universe are the same until about 1988 and then become a psuedo mix of the 1960s, 1970s etc.  The millennium still takes place at the millennium.  This way characters still age at the correct rate. Therefore for the purpose of this unofficial X-Men Reading Order :

consists of stories printed 1962 - 1963

consists of stories printed 1964 - 1967

consists of stories printed 1968 - 1971

consists of stories printed 1972 - 1975

consists of stories printed 1976 - 1979

consists of stories printed 1980 - 1983

consists of stories printed 1984 - 1987

consists of stories printed 1988 - 1990

consists of stories printed 1991 - 1993

consists of stories printed 1994 - 1996

consists of stories printed 1997 - 1999

consists of stories printed 2000 - 2002

consists of stories printed 2003 - 2005

consists of stories printed 2006 - 2008

consists of stories printed 2009 - 2011

consists of stories printed 2012 - 2014

consists of stories printed 2015 -

Don't take what you read too seriously.  It is Christmas when ever the writers feel like it.  So time of year is best ignored. Also ignore references to topical events. Some times 'Marvel time' is not always used by writers so there are contradictions.  Sometimes events are referred back to in real time.  Sometimes events in the past have been retconned/overwritten.  Sometimes characters refer to events as a month ago when they only happened a week ago etc.
