[edit] Early life
Orphaned just after her birth when her parents died in a plane crash. She was adopted by the Danes, who she believed to be her birth mothers sister and brother in law. She did not learn the fate of birth parents or of her adoption until her early twenties.
The earliest sign of Lorna's mutation was her green hair, which her adoptive parents concealed by dieing it brown, other than this she did not carry any of the genetic triggers that would have seen her power become active with puberty. In the aftermath of the original X-Men defeat of Magneto, and his subsequent death, the robotics engineer Samuel Saxon constructed a Magneto replica in an effort to gain criminal wealth. Using the Magneto bot, and troop of robots he abducted Lorna, and using a genetic stimulator altered her genetic structure and activated her latent mutant abilities. Hiding behind the Magneto robot he recruited the mutant Mesmero who would in turn use his hypnotic powers on Lorna making her believe that the Magneto bot was her father and gaining her loyalty. Saxon now had the image of Magneto and the powers to match. During an altercation between Saxons' Magneto bot and the X-Men, Mesmero released his control over Lorna thinking she would now follow the man she believed to be her father. This was his fatal error, Lorna sided with the X-Men and defeated Saxon.
Lorna now a member of the X-Men and student of Professor-X, was romantically inclined towards Iceman (Bobby Drake). She eventually fell in love with Havoc (Alex Summers).
Now as a graduate of the Xavier Institute and longer wishing to lead he life of a costumed adventurer both she and Alex decided to leave the X-Men, moving to the Diablo mountain range to begin degree work in geophysics.
With their college degrees completed Alex and Lorna now occasionally and reluctantly aid the X-Men until they found themselves hunted by the Mauradrs. The Mauraders leader Malice uses her psionic powers to possess Lorna, and turns Lorna's powers against Alex and the X-Men. Alex and the X-Men overcome the Mauraders but Malice escapes with Lorna.
Malice discovers that she and Lorna have been bonded. Lorna eventually overcomes Malice's influence and contacts the X-Men fro help.
Be the time the X-Men arrive, they are to late to prevent Lorna's capture by the Savage Land Priestess Zaladane. Zaladane claimed to be Lorna's sister and used a device to transfer Lorna's power to her. This permanently severed the link between Lorna and Malice and caused an additional mutation in Lorna exhibiting increased height, superhuman strength and resistance to injury.
To discover more about her new abilities Lorna decided to move to the mutant research center on Muir Island, off the cost of Scotland. While traveling on a freighter she learned that her new powers were feed by negative emotions. The Shadow King used this as an opportunity to gain access from the Astral Plain, possessing Lorna.
After an altercation with a revived Magneto and Rogue, Zaladane was defeated and Lorna's powers returned to her.
Lorna was then recruited by the United States government, as part of the state sanctioned mutant team X-Factor, where she was finally reunited with Alex.
[edit] Powers and abilities
Magnetic Field Manipulation: ability to manipulate magnetism. Although she has the potential to exercise all of the powers that Magneto has, as yet she has only used powers involving the manipulation of magnetic, electrical, and gravitational fields. Moreover, she has yet summon as great an amount of energy as Magneto has. The exact limits on the amount weight that she can magnetically lift at present have not been measured. Since she has, in the past, preferred not to use her powers in combat situations, and has decades less experience with them, she is not up to par with Magneto's level of experience. As with Magneto, it is unknown whether Polaris's powers are purely psionic or whether they derive from her physically
[edit]
Magnetic Force-Fields: Polaris can protect herself from physical harm, can stretch her fields to protect a large group, and can suspend persons or objects in the air.
Magnetic Flight: Polaris can suspend herself in flight by riding the Earth's magnetic field.
Electromagnetic Sight: By concentrating, Polaris can perceive the world around herself solely as patterns of magnetic and electrical energy. She can perceive the natural magnetic auras surrounding living beings, as well.
Magnetic Pulse: Polaris can focus her magnetic energy into powerful concussive blasts. She can also overload or short-circuit electrical systems. She has been shown destroying Shi'ar warships with single magnetic pulses.
Energy Absorption: Polaris has been shown absorbing some forms of energy through her magnetic force fields to temporarily boost her own strengths. Early in her career with the X-Men, she absorbed Storm's lightning blast, Cyclops' eye beam, and Havok's energy beam at the same time, giving her enough strength to propel an entire island from the earth and into space.
Her personal polarity is opposite that of Magneto's.
Polaris has a latent secondary mutation. Manifesting when her powers were stripped and taken by her half-sister Zaladane.
Negative Emotion Absorption (formerly, latent again): absorb negative emotional energy to transform into a virtual powerhouse.
- Increased Size
- Increased Strength
- Increased Endurance
- Invulnerability.
- Negative Emotional Release: Her power also released the negativity back into her environment at an enhanced level, which caused others to act more violent, selfish, bloodthirsty, etc.
After the events of M-Day, Lorna found she was among the majority of mutants who had lost their powers.
Meta-Plague Manipulation (formerly): As Pestilence, Lorna had the ability to ingest and synthesize new plagues without harm, controlling the virulence and particular genetic markers. Capable of then releasing this virus or plague as a combined mutated strain or as the various separate plagues they originally were.[http:// ]
[edit] Abilities
Lorna possesses expertise in geophysics, and has earned a Masters degree in that field.[http:// ]
[edit] Strength level
Polaris possesses the normal human strength of a woman of her age, height, and build who engages in moderate regular exercise. When possessed by Malice, Lorna had superhuman strength with an unknown upper limit.
